Mike J. Tesar Obituary

John Michael “Mike” Tesar, age 86, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on April 28, 2026. Mike was born on January 1, 1940, in Duluth, Minnesota, to John and Zelta Tesar. He was raised in Hopkins, where he graduated from Hopkins High School in 1958.

He met the love of his life, Janice, at the Lucky 7 Diner. They were married on April 20, 1963, beginning a beautiful partnership that lasted 63 years. Shortly after their marriage, Mike served in the United States Air Force as an Airman Second Class (E3) and was stationed at St. Edwards Air Force Base in California. During this time, they welcomed their first son, Gary. Less than a year later, their family grew again with the arrival of their second son, Todd.

A skilled aircraft mechanic, Mike spent many years working for Northwest Airlines until his retirement in 2001. While he valued his career in aviation, his true passion was racing. He turned this passion into a lifelong venture by founding Tesar Engineering, a racing engine business that celebrated its 60th year in operation in 2026. Through his mentorship, craftsmanship, and dedication, Mike left a lasting impact on countless employees, customers, and friends. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Jan Tesar; sons, Gary (Tammy) Tesar and Todd (Josette) Tesar; grandchildren, Cole, Madison, Taylor, and Anna; great granddaughter, Landry; sister, Andrea Childs; and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Zelta Tesar, and his brothers, Jon and Jeff.

He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. A Celebration of Life honoring Mike will be held on Saturday, May 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Rettinger Funeral Home, 425 Lake Street, Long Lake, MN 55356.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to the NewGate School, a nonprofit automotive technical school that provides tuition free training and career support for underserved young adults in the Twin Cities.
